William Shakespeare

Poet, playwright

William Shakespeare was a poet, playwright and actor born in Stratford-upon-Avon, England in 1564. He is widely considered to be the greatest writer and playwright in the history of the English language. He wrote over thirty-eight plays, two long narrative poems, several shorter poems and contributed to many collaborative works. His works include most of the transcendent plays and classic tragedies such as Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth and Hamlet, as well as comedies, historical events and romances such as The Taming of the Shrew and A Midsummer Night's Dream. Many of his works were published as quarto editions and became popular in their own right. Shakespeare's works have been translated into more than one hundred languages, and his plays continue to be performed in theatres all around the world. Probably the most well-known figures in the history of world literature, Shakespeare's plays focus on the universal human emotions such as love, honour, greed, power, betrayal, revenge and friendship. He wrote his plays in a variety of verse and prose which range from the poetic to the idiomatic. His characterisations of kings, aristocrats, clowns, servants and lovers have been continually influential, and have inspired countless plays, films, and poems. His work has been studied and produced by people from all walks of life, and his plays have become an integral part of the English literary canon. He is even credited with inventing more than 1900 English words and phrases, including such classics as “portentous” and “pandemonium”. To this day, he remains one of the most influential figures in the history of literature, theatre and popular culture.
