James Allen is a celebrated late 19th and early 20th century English philosopher and author. Many of his writings show a profound understanding of life and the way to lead a successful and fulfillment-filled life. He is especially known for unlocking the power of thought and for teaching how to effectively employ universal laws to gain mastery of one’s life. Allen was born in Leicester, England in 1864 and he was largely self-educated. Allen gradually rose to great fame upon the publication of his most famous work, “As a Man Thinketh.” This book is considered one of his most important works, as it delved deeply into the power of thought and exposed truths about the way our thoughts shape our lives. In this book, Allen wrote that what we think, we become. He wrote that a man can control his destiny, his environment, and his circumstances through clear, directed thinking. Allen’s philosophy was heavily influenced by Eastern thought, especially the teachings of Buddha. Other works such as “The Way of Peace” and “The Path of Prosperity” continued his discussion of the power of thought, meditation, and other insightful observations. In his later years, Allen moved to Ilfracombe, England, where he wrote other popular works such as “The Mastery of Destiny.” This work continued Allen’s basic premise of how to successfully direct one’s life. Even after his death in 1912, Allen’s works continued to be sold and read around the world. His teachings on the power of thought, will-power, and other spiritual principles remain popular and widely read today. A testament to his success and enduring philosophical teachings, Allen is widely considered one of the great fathers of modern philosophy.
