Charles Darwin (1809-1882) was an English naturalist, geologist, and the most influential evolutionist of all time. Born in Shrewsbury, England, he was the fifth of six children and was exposed to nature at a young age. His father was a successful physician and his mother was a daughter of wealthy mercantile landowners. At the age of sixteen, Darwin was sent to Edinburgh University to study medicine but develop an interest in natural history and switched to Cambridge University to study theology. In 1831, Darwin joined the HMS Beagle on a five-year voyage around the world. This expedition was particularly formative for Darwin's development as a scientist, as he studied geology and biology, collecting fossils and specimens. During the voyage, he observed the plants and animals of different regions, noting the differences in their physical appearances and behaviors. He also visited the Galapagos Islands, where he made detailed observations of the endemic plants and animals, eventually becoming a leading authority on their adaptation to the environment. Upon returning to England, Darwin penned his renowned work On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection in which he proposed the theory of evolution by natural selection. This suggested that particular species were not fixed and effective but rather, they adapted and changed gradually over time as a result of their environment and environment interactions. The impact of Charles Darwin's work is still relevant today. He forever changed the way we think about the natural world and our relationship to it. His theories are now used in biology, paleontology, anthropology, and other related fields. His influence on science and society is arguably the greatest in modern history and surely, his legacy will live on.

You know how in college you’re supposed to read a book that changes your life? Well, for me, this was that book.
One of the most striking things about Darwin was his amazing work ethic. What I found inspiring was the dogged nature of his quest for knowledge and truth. I think Darwin's daily habits underline a belief I've had for quite some time that our best work is done alone. Perhaps the reason this isn't championed more often as a path to success is that it is boring and by nature, we are social animals. Also intriguing about Darwin is that seems little evidence from his teenage years that he would become such an influential scientist.
