The Book: On the Taboo Against Knowing Who You Are

Categories:Non-Fiction

The Book: On the Taboo Against Knowing Who You Are, by Alan W. Watts, challenges readers to break away from convention and expectations and seek real self-knowledge. Through thought-provoking and humorous anecdotes, Watts addresses why we are so resistant to the process of searching for our true identity. He offers a refreshing perspective on the importance of self-inquiry in our lives.Watts argues that we can never truly understand ourselves if we try to conform to society's definition of who we should be, rather than making the more challenging effort to know ourselves directly and as we truly are. He describes this as a taboo because it is a nearly-impossible task, and one that forces us to go beyond what we know and what has been told to us by society. Watts emphasizes that we should not allow our beliefs and habits to determine our identity. He urges readers to take an in-depth look into the motivations that drive their actions and make decisions based on their individual values, rather than relying on what others consider to be correct and appropriate. Only then, argues Watts, will we be able to discover our true selves. The Book: On the Taboo Against Knowing Who You Are is an intriguing and open-minded exploration of finding our true identity. It offers readers insight into how to break away from society's expectations and instead find solace and comfort in their own unique personhood. Watts encourages us to take the potentially-difficult path of self-discovery and revel in the knowledge of our true selves.

Kevin Lamping (Founder/WebdriverIO) Not a business book, but *The Book* is one that I can say shines out among the other stars. It's hard to pick a book that's had the most impact on me, because they always have some effect. But there was something so calming, so reassuring about *The Book* that really helped me in a time of lots of self-doubt. I know this is supposed to focus on less "spiritual" books, and I'm not a religious guy, but I really enjoyed the notions put forth by *The Book*. Watts, the author, has some really profound thinking, and his writing guides you through Eastern thought for Western thinkers. I highly recommend this book for anyone searching for answers to the unknown.
